MALAYSIAN WOMEN’S DOUBLES PAIR WIN NEW ZEALAND BADMINTON OPEN
KUALA LUMPUR–Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair Vivian Hoo Kah Mun/Woon Khe Wei received a major boost ahead of the Kuala Lumpur SEA (South East Asia) Games after emerging victorious in the New Zealand Open Grand Prix Gold Badminton Tournament in Auckland, New Zealand Sunday.
The pair, ranked world number 14, and under fire for their uninspiring performances in a few tournaments, answered their critics by putting up a splendid show by defeating fourth seeds Ayako Sakuramoto/Yukiko Takahata of Japan;18-21, 21-16, 21-19 in the final held at the North Shore Events Centre, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website; “http://www.bwfbadminton.com, www.bwfbadminton.com.
National men’s doubles pair, Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi,however, failed to emulate the winning feat after losing 16-21 and 18-21 to the the top seed, Chen Hung Ling/Wang Chi-Lin of Taiwan.
The country’s challenge in three other events -men’s and women’s singles and also the mixed doubles event fizzled out after the players were eliminated in the preliminary round of the US$120,000 (RM513,660) tournament.
Meanwhile, Malaysia won the boys Under 15 singles and Under 17 singles titles at the Jakarta Open Junior International Championships in Indonesia Sunday.
