MALAYSIA: MAYBANK ISLAMIC LOOKS TO EXPAND SHARIAH BANKING TO ASEAN

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Maybank Islamic Bhd is looking to expand the Islamic banking system to ASEAN countries, said Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Rafique Merican.

“Our focus is within ASEAN as we also eye opportunities to collaborate with other countries. We see growth prospects for Islamic banking within the region and we want to share our experience and journey,” he said.

Mohamed Rafique was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Islamic Banking and Finance Media Workshop 2.0 jointly-organised by the National Press Club and Maybank Islamic here today.

He said Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia were main contributors to Islamic banking in the region.

Mohamed Rafique added that the bank, as for now, had developed similar strategies for Islamic finance to tackle other South East Asian countries.
