The new Samsung Galaxy S6 will already come with less Samsung bloatware than its predecessor but the TouchWiz bundler is going a step further and apparently letting users delete most of the pre-installed apps as well. The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will get the Android 5.1 Lollipop update in June, according to a schedule posted by Rogers, a Canadian carrier. The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are the first devices officially confirmed to get the Android 5.1 Lollipop update.
Mobile Syrup says the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update on the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will bring new features such as Guest Mode, Kids Mode and support for Google Camera 1 API, which will allow RAW format shooting.
Currently the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are getting a software update to fix memory management issues and improve the fingerprint scanner. The build number for these updates are XXU1AOE3 and XXU1AODG. The update is rolling out OTA in Malaysia as a 159MB download and comes with new photo editor features, revamped app interface and improved accessory compatibility.
SamMobile points out that Android 5.1 Lollipop isn’t a huge update, though given the somewhat buggy nature of Android 5.0, it will be nice to get the bugfixes, performance and stability improvements. For our part we have noticed some app crashes and overheating on both the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, so hopefully the Android 5.1 update can help resolve those issues.
To check to see if you are eligible for the update, first make sure the Samsung Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge are charged. Then go to Settings–>General–>About device–>Software updates–>Check for updates. If not you may have to check again over the course of the next few days. Your other option is to download and install the firmware yourself by connecting your device to the computer and updating it with Samsung Kies.
The Rogers OS update schedule is still tentative and the dates are subject to change. We will keep you posted when we hear that the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are getting OTA rollouts for the update.
