MALAYSIA: TOURIST ARRIVALS TO MELAKA REACHES 8.14 MILLION FROM JAN-JUNE

MELAKA, Malaysia — The number of tourist arrivals to Melaka has reached 8.14 million in the first six months of this year compared to 7.28 million in the same period last year, according to Melak state Chief Minister Idris Harun.

He said domestic tourists continued to be the biggest contributors to the number with 5.37 million compared to 2.76 million foreign tourists; and the 11.79 per cent jump in the number of tourist arrivals was very encouraging for Melaka which targeted 16.75 million tourists this year.

“On July 19, Melaka was listed as among the 10 best tourism destinations in Asia this year through the report by Lonely Planet, the biggest tourist guide firm in the world, hence opening a new dimension to tourists to continue opting for Melaka,” he told a media conference at Seri Bendahara, Ayer Keroh here yesterday.

Earlier, the chief minister flagged off 30 cars involved in the Jalur Gemilang Convoy organised by Melaka Tourism Industry Activists.

Also present were State Tourism, River, Beaches and Island Development Committee deputy chairman Ghazale Muhamad and State Tourism Promotion Division general manager Norena Jaafar.

Idris said five countries which were Melaka’s biggest tourist markets were China (28.39 per cent), Singapore (25.65 per cent), Indonesia (13.02 per cent), Taiwan (3.46 per cent) and Vietnam (2.84 per cent).
