MALAYSIA: INDONESIAN CONSULATE IN TAWAU REGISTERS MARRIAGE OF 2,144 INDONESIAN COUPLES SINCE 2012

TAWAU, Sabah state, Malaysia — The Indonesian Consulate (KRI) in Tawau has registered the marriage of 2,144 Indonesian workforce (TKI) couples in Lahad Datu, Kunak, Semporna and Tawau, since 2012, said its Consul-General in Tawau, Krishna Djelani.

Krishna said the Tawau KRI opens the Court of Justice at the office every year to help the TKI couples who had worked and lived in Sabah for a long time to register their marriage under Indonesian Marriage Law.

The registered TKI are generally working as farm workers, fishermen and shop assistants, he told reporters after officiating the 2017 Itsbat Nikah (Marriage Register programme) at KRI Office, here yesterday.

Tawau KRI office has opened the Court of Justice for four days from yesterday to register marriage for 295 TKI couples in Sabah’s East Coast whose marriages were solemnised by supervisors but had yet to register with to Indonesian Consulate Office.

Krishna said the implementation of ‘Itsbat Nikah’ in Tawau KRI was one of the main task of the Indonesian consulate to protect their citizens abroad.
