Sarawak Rumbia Board To Enhance Sago Industry

MUKAH: The establishment of Sarawak Rumbia Board will improve the economy of Mukah as well as the income of the people there, said Minister of Welfare, Community Well-Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah.

Speaking during the opening of Mukah Zone Parti Pesaka Bumiputra (PBB) delegates meeting at Kingwood Resort here recently, she said rumbia is the fourth largest contributor in agriculture in the state.

In terms of agriculture, rumbia is the fourth largest contributor after palm oil, pepper and fisheries.

From 51,518 hectares of rumbia plantation in the state, 45,392 hectares (88.11 per cent) are actually in Mukah and 90 per cent (40,642 hectares) are managed by small holder farmers, she pointed out.

Effort such as expanding the market for the product whether traditionally or through online is a strategic effort to improve the economy, income and quality of life of the people in Mukah, she reiterated.
