Filtering method a way to tackle sea pollution

MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) is looking into ways to tackle the pollution at sea and one of the possibilities is by filtering rivers and drains, meant to reduce outflow of rubbish.

According to Mayor Adam Yii, the rubbish produced by the people and dumped recklessly into drains and rivers are seen as one of the reasons that cause sea pollution.

By filtering the rubbish and stopping them from entering the sea, we can at least control and reduce the possibility of these (discarded items) from hurting the marine life, said Yii.

As for the rubbish washed ashore, Yii said the only way would be to continuously clean the beaches here.

We cannot and should not stop the rubbish from being washed ashore because if it’s left in the sea, it would sink and cause the seabed to be filled with rubbish, he said after launching the clean-up campaign at Marina Beach here yesterday.

The programme was a collaboration between Pantai Bayu Indah Sdn Bhd, MCC and its contractors to clean up the 1.5km dirty shoreline along Marina Beach.

It involved three three-tonne lorries, two JCV trucks and a beach comber to speed up cleaning works.

Yii also said Pantai Bayu Indah had been doing its own beach clean-up campaign over the past two years, carried out almost every month to help reduce the pile-up of rubbish on the beach.
