KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia May 22 (NNN-Bernama) Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has stressed that the newly-formed Cabinet will move as a team to ensure the agenda to develop the country runs smooth.

The Parti Keadilan Rakyat president said she gave full support to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to jointly develop a new Malaysia.

“I am grateful today’s swearing-in ceremony went smoothly and tomorrow, I will talk with the prime minister on the subsequent direction, and help the Cabinet under Tun Dr Mahathir to function smoothly,” she said.

She was met by reporters after taking her oath of office, loyalty and secrecy before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Malaysia’s King) Sultan Muhammad V at Istana Negara (Palace) yesterday.

Wan Azizah considers her election as the first woman to hold the post of DPM in the country as a great honour for all Malaysian women.

“I hope my role (as deputy prime minister) will improve the gender sensitivity aspect in today’s administration and (target) 30 per cent women’s participation (in the policy makers’ line-up) which we announced will be implemented more comprehensively, she said.

On her portfolio as Women and Family Development Minister, Wan Azizah said she was planning to develop and improve the performance of the ministry.

“I have a lot to think about…such as women’s policies, family policies and so on because this ministry is wide ranging, (including) encompassing the unborn stages to the end of life.

“But for now, we will focus on the activities of Ramadan to enliven Ramadan and fill the Ramadan in a better way,” he said.
