SULAWESI TWIN DISASTER: MALAYSIAN DPM DR WAN AZIZAH, JUSUF KALLA DISCUSS HUMANITARIAN AID

JAKARTA, Indonesia Oct 9 (NNN-Bernama)Humanitarian aid for victims of the earthquake and tsunami disaster in Central Sulawesi was among the top topics in Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s meeting with her Indonesian counterpart Jusuf Kalla here Tuesday.
In the meeting which took place at the Indonesian Vice President’s office in conjunction with her one-day working visit to the republic, Dr Wan Azizah extended sympathies on behalf of Malaysians and the Malaysian government to the victims of the twin disaster that struck the province on Sept 28.
She said Malaysia would offer a helping hand to alleviate the burden of the victims.
She noted that aid offered by Malaysia and accepted by the Indonesian government included making available an A400M cargo plane and two C130H aircraft belonging to the Royal Malaysian Air Force to ferry aid to the beleaguered province.
“The Malaysian government also contributed RM1 million and set up the Sulawesi Earthquake/Tsunami Disaster Fund (TBGBTS) on Oct 4 to help the victims, Dr Wan Azizah, who is also Malaysia’s National Disaster Management Committee chairman, told reporters after the meeting.
Dr Wan Azizah said they also discussed matters of common interest to further boost Malaysia-Indonesia ties.
This is Dr Wan Azizah’s first working visit to Indonesia since taking over as Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia on May 21 following the opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan’s victory in Malaysia’s 14th general election on May 9.
Earlier, Dr Wan Azizah. who is also Women, Family and Community Development Minister, had paid a courtesy call on Indonesian President Joko Widodo and held a meeting with Minister of Women Empowerment and Children Protection, Yohana Susana Yembise.
Her packed itinerary includes a visit to the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Management for a first hand look on activities to assist the victims of the twin disaster.NNN-BERNAMA
