Authorities, ferry and boat operators must undergo safety audit – Lee

KUALA LUMPUR, The authorities as well boat and ferry operators must conduct safety audits on their water transport to prevent a repeat of the incident which occurred on passenger ferry Dragon Star 1 which caught fire in the waters off Langkawi, Kedah today.

Chairman of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said at the same time, the Marine Department must also direct all operators to conduct comprehensive checks on the wiring system on their boats to make sure that these are in good condition.

The fire on a passenger ferry which was travelling from Langkawi Island to Kuala Perlis at 2.50 pm today should open everyone’s eyes on the importance of safety, he said in a statement.
