MSN targets more Olympic slots for sailing

KUALA LUMPUR, The National Sports Council (MSN) through the Podium Programme will identify more sailors with potential to qualify for the 2020 Olympics in the RS:X: windsurfer and 470: two-person dinghy events.

MSN director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail said the sailing squad would be participating in the 2019 World Championships in August, in the RS:X and 470 events, which also happens to be the qualifying event for the Olympics.

“There are some sailors who we see have the potential to qualify for the Olympics in the windsurfing and 470 events.

“So, we are focusing on them to qualify for the Olympics,” he told reporters after chairing the working committee meeting for sailing here today.

Two national sailors, Khairulnizam Mohd Afendy Abdullah and Nur Shazrin Mohd Latif, have already qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in standard laser and laser radial events respectively.

Among the other sailors with potential to qualify are Nuraisyah Jamil and Norashikin Mohamad Sayed (470 women) and Nuur Abdul Rahman and Illham Wahab (Mixed RS One).

Meanwhile, Ahmad Shapawi said the athletes were currently undergoing training at the National Sailing Training Centre in Langkawi, and will also be participating in local competitions in preparation for the SEA Games in the Philippines this November.
