Raha, first woman appointed UTeM VC

PUTRAJAYA, Higher Education Department Excellence Planning for Higher Education Institution Division director, Prof Dr. Raha Abdul Rahim has been appointed as the new Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) vice-chancellor, effective tomorrow.

She will replace Datuk Prof Dr. Shahrin Sahib@ Sahibuddin, who held the position since June 16, 2014.

Raha’s appointment until June 15, 2022, will make the Johor-born as the first woman appointed to spearhead UTem.

A statement from the Higher Education Department under the Education Ministry here today said the appointment was based on her expertise, knowledge, experience, and achievement during her tenure as the director of the Higher Education Excellence Planning Division and previous posts both at the national and international arena.

After obtaining her first degree in Microbiology from Oklahoma State University, United States, Raha continued with her doctorate degree at Strathclyde University, United Kingdom.

She also served as Research Management Centre director and deputy dean (Research and Postgraduate Studies) of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, both at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

Raha is also a member of the American Society for Microbiology and chief secretary of Asian Federation of Societies for Lactic Acid Bacteria. Dr.Raha also has produced over 130 academic journals.

With her wide experience, the ministry believes she can drive the excellence of UTem to a higher level to achieve the vision and mission as a leading technical university, the statement added.

The ministry also expressed its appreciation to Shahrin for his dedication and leadership during his tenure.
