Pos Malaysia launches Sour Fruits Stamp Series

KUALA LUMPUR, Pos Malaysia Berhad (Pos Malaysia) will be releasing a new series of stamps called the Sour Fruits Stamp Series, featuring three variants of the “asam plant and fruit, namely the Asam Kelubi, Asam Embang and Asam Kandis.

Its Stamp and Philatelic Unit head Haidan Abdul Rahman, said the series would highlight the use and diversity of asam and how the plant grows and spreads in the natural environment.

“Often the asam is made into a pickle and the stamp series will show the other side of its use in cuisine and medicine which up to now, is rarely known by our society.

“Not only that, this series also gives young people the chance to recognise the asam plant variants in their original form, he told reporters at the stamp-series introduction session here today.

Collectors and stamp enthusiasts can get the collection on Wednesday (June 19).

“Only 600,000 pieces of stamps or 200,000 pieces for each design have been produced. Interestingly, the Mini Sheet (MS) on this series comes in the form of a longitudinal octagon that features the asam jawa, he said.

He added that the MS printed only 22,000 pieces at RM3 each while the special date stamp has a combination of all the asam plant variants featured in the series.

Among other philatelic products for the series are the 27,000 First Day Covers (FDC) printed at a price of 50 sen each and 1,600 folders each available at RM6.

Meanwhile, Pak Ali Food Industries Sdn Bhd managing director Alias Ali, who attended the event, said the selection of using the products of the plant as a stamp display was an honour to him as he had worked hard in coming up with Jeruk Madu Pal Ali, a popular honey pickle.

“This is the first collaboration between the company and Pos Malaysia and of course we are very excited, he said.
