Flying start for Malaysia at Indoor Hockey Asia Cup

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia got off to a flying start at the 2019 Indoor Hockey Asia Cup in Chonburi, Thailand after the men’s team whipped Bangladesh 6-0, while the women defeated neighbours Singapore 4-0.

The boys began their Pool A campaign with a second minute penalty corner goal through Mohd Shafiq Yaacob before Faridzul Afiq Mohd and Shello Silverius added field goals in the fifth and 15th minute.

Mohd Shafiq and Faridzul completed their brace through a penalty stroke at the end of first half and a field goal in the 37th minute respectively, while Muhammad Firdaus Omar ended the scoring feast with a field goal in the 39th minute.

The boys would next meet the Philippines tomorrow, followed by defending champion Iran on Thursday and end the group fixture against host Thailand on Friday.

Meanwhile, Nur Afiqah Syahzani Azhar led the women’s team for a comfortable win against the neighbours in the Pool B game with a brace through a ninth minute penalty corner and 14th minute field goal.

Later, in the second half, Siti Arfah Mohd Nor and Ellya Syahirah Ellias netted another two, a 27th minute penalty corner and 40th minute field goal respectively to secure the three points.

The girls will be facing host Thailand on Wednesday and Taiwan on Thursday.

Only the top two finishers in the group stage would advance to the semifinals of the biennial tournament, which also offers a berth to the 2021 World Cup.
