MPSP detect encroachments into govt land to be made graveyard

GEORGE TOWN, The Penang State Government through the Seberang Perai Municipal Council has uncovered efforts by an individual to encroach into government land in Batu Kawan and use it as a graveyard.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said today the operations which were conducted on last Wednesday involved a 71.2-hectare piece of government land, known as Lot 248. The operations also blocked eight routes into and out of the government land.

The encroachments were first detected on Sept 25 last year, and the state government issued a notice on April 5 this year but it was ignored. That is why this enforcement action was taken, he said in a press conference here.

He said the individual concerned had built a wall, structural landscape, decorative replicas and a shack for workers on the land.

Chow said the individual had also encroached into the adjacent plot of land, Lot 248, which was owned by the government, and created 43 grave plots on it.

He said the head of enforcement had lodged a police report after the individual tried to stop the team from carrying out their job, and the individual is now being investigated by the police.
