Haze: API readings down, Melaka schools to open as usual tomorrow

MELAKA, All schools in Melaka will open as usual tomorrow now that the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in the state have dropped to unhealthy level, from very unhealthy yesterday, said State Education director Datuk Abu Bakar Sahari.

He said the decision was based on the declining trend in API readings in the state since noon until 3 pm today.

However, he said, the department, through the district education offices, would continue to monitor the haze situation.

The school administrators can also refer to the disaster management officers in their respective district on whether the schools have to be closed or not, he said when contacted here today.

There are 315 primary and secondary schools in Melaka, involving 148,901 students.

It was reported yesterday that all schools will be closed tomorrow if the API readings in the state exceeded 200 today.

As at 5 pm today, the API reading in Bandaraya Melaka was 136, Bukit Rambai (134) and Alor Gajah (123).

An API reading of zero to 50 indicates good air quality; 51 to 100, moderate; 101 to 200, unhealthy; 201 to 300, very unhealthy and 300 and above, hazardous.
