Sufficient stock of N95 masks – supplier

KUALA LUMPUR, Despite growing demand for N95-type face masks in the market due to the worsening haze situation, some pharmacies and hardware stores still do not place sufficient stock for sale to the public.

3M Malaysia Personal Safety Division Manager Wong Siew Hooi said some vendors do not keep much stock of respirators as the items are slow-moving and not needed in excess, most of the time.

Generally demand for respirators is not high which is possibly why pharmacies do not stock up large quantities. But given the severity of the haze this time around, vendors may be struggling to cope with the sudden spike in demand,” she told Bernama in an interview at 3M Malaysia headquarters, here today.

In the past few days, stocks of N95 masks have been running low in pharmacies and online stores as people are now more aware of the importance of using the mask to protect themselves from the haze that has blanketed the nation.

There are various types of respirators to cover the nose and mouth, but N95 mask has been recommended by the Health Ministry as it can filter at least 95 per cent of 0.3 micron particles and it works best when used properly and fits the wearer’s face.

Wong said since the haze has been worsening and the country was in a critical situation for the last two weeks, 3M is doing everything they could to supply N95 masks throughout the country.

We will ensure the price of N95 mask do not increase as the public are in need of protection during the haze crisis, she said.

As one of the main suppliers for the mask, 3M has been actively involved in public awareness campaigns in the past two months since the haze, to ensure the people are well informed on the effectiveness of the N95 mask.

This includes developing educational videos, posters, social media engagements, setting up the 3M Safety Flagship Store on Lazada, as well as collaboration with relevant sectors such as Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) and National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
