Chek Hup sees double-digit international sales growth next year

BANGKOK, Perak-based instant coffee manufacturer Chek Hup Sdn Bhd (Chek Hup) is eyeing a double-digit international sales growth next year, backed by new products launch.

Its head of International Business Christopher Lau said it was also looking for more exclusive foreign distributors to support its expansion plan.

We are looking at about 40 per cent increase in international sales next year with the launch of new products as well as appointing more new exclusive distributors to establish a strong foothold in some countries, he told Bernama recently.

Famous for its white coffee product series, Chek Hup would introduce new products, including flavoured coffee, he said.

We are also focusing on health-conscious consumers. Our coffee products are not using additives or artificial flavourings. We are using rock sugar instead of normal sugar, said Lau.

He said the company currently had exclusive distributors in 10 countries, including the United States and Canada.

We are now looking to appoint exclusive distributors in countries such as Thailand and the United Kingdom. We have our presence in these countries but without distributors, he said, adding that it was also looking to expand its footprint in China.

In China, our products are only available via an online platform, Taobao, and we are looking to capture a bigger market share in the country by having our products on its supermarket shelves, said Lau.

Originally a rock sugar producer, Chek Hup ventured into the instant beverages business by manufacturing 3-in-1 white coffee products in 2000, using rock sugar as one of the core ingredients.

At present, the company has a wide range of instant beverages including ‘teh tarik’ and ‘hot chocolate’ as well as instant gourmet coffee – Black Mandheling Coffee.

The company expanded into foreign markets in 2003.
