More than 1,000 school counsellors upskilled under PCP

SANDAKAN, More than 1,000 school counsellors from 150 schools nationwide have been upskilled under the Petronas Counsellors Programme (PCP) since last year.

Petronas Group Head (Human Capital Investment) Human Resource Management Nelly Francis Shariah said the programme aimed to equip school counsellors with skills in guiding students on career opportunities in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), particularly for the oil and gas sector.

“Through this programme, Petronas aims to equip school counsellors to help shape the younger generation’s career choice and ultimately, provide a steady stream of talents for STEM-related careers such as in the oil and gas sector, she said at a two-day PCP seminar here today.

Nelly said Petronas’ investment in human capital development covered a wide spectrum of programmes designed to enable a continuous and sustainable pipeline of skilled workforce for the nation.

She said under the PCP, the school counsellors were given an overview of Petronas’ operations in Sabah and the Petronas’ Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP), which is awarded to deserving students to pursue tertiary education at Universiti Teknologi Petronas as well as universities abroad.

On Petronas’ corporate social responsibility programmes spearheaded by Yayasan Petronas, Nelly said the construction of a rural hostel funded by the oil and gas company at Pulau Balambangan, Kudat has been completed and is expected to be officiated by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal on Oct 19.

She said the hostel, which began construction in April last year, could house 120 male and female students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Balambangan, who faced challenges to commute to the school daily.

She also said the construction of two Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSM) in Ranau and Bintulu, joint initiatives between Petronas and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), were expected to be completed in 2021 and would be able to cater to 450 students at each college.
