Pendang folk call for flooding issues to be resolved for good

PENDANG, Pendang folk affected by floods due to the overflowing of the river here on Sunday have called on the authorities to solve their woes once and for all.

A tile dealer in Kampung Seberang Pendang here said he suffered thousands of ringgit in losses due to the floods.

Ng Cheng Khian, 50, said apart from the tiles getting spoilt, sales had also declined as customers could not get to the premises.

“We usually sell 300 to 500 boxes of tiles worth about RM8,000 on normal days, but since the floods (on Sunday), sales have declined to only 50 to 60 boxes, worth between RM1,000 and RM2,000 a day, he said, adding that the floods occurred almost on a yearly basis.

He urged the government to either deepen or widen the river, so that such situations did not recur.

Meanwhile, a resident who lives near the river also claimed to have incurred losses due to the incident.

Sharifah Abd Rahman, 48, of Kampung Pondok Haji Husin said due to the close proximity of her home to the river, the water level rose so quickly that she could not salvage some of the electrical equipment and furniture in time.

“On Monday, a young python entered the house. Fearing a similar incident from occurring again, I took the decision to move, my neighbors also relocated to the relief centre at the Cenderawasih Hall yesterday,” she said, hoping the government could take the necessary measures to overcome the flood problem in the area.

According to Social Welfare Department, there were 103 people from 32 families placed at the Cederawasih Hall as of 2 pm today.
