41 flood evacuees still at relief centre in Gua Musang

GUA MUSANG, Forty-one flood evacuees from Kampung Tanah Puteh here are still at the temporary relief centre in Etnobotani here since last night after heavy rain continued for more than three hours.

Heavy rain from 8 pm caused 12 houses in the village to be inundated by flash floods up to the waist and victims from eight families were evacuated by members of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department at 11 pm.

Gua Musang district police chief Supt Mohd Taufik Maidin said the village was located in a low-lying area and was frequently affected by flash floods during heavy rains and this week it was flooded twice.

When the first flood occurred on Saturday night the situation was in chaos and the people were temporarily relocated to the village madrasah, he said in a statement.

Mohd Taufik said the evacuees were given the option to remain at the relief centre after the floods receded in the event of another round of flash floods this evening.

More important for flood victims to stay at the temporary relief centres especially for the safety of children, he said.

Meanwhile, district Social Welfare Department officer Hizani Ibrahim when met at the relief centre said all flood victims stationed at the centre were being listed for food aid.
