M’sia U-19 squad thrash Northern Mariana Islands 10-0

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia continued their impressive run at the 2020 Asia Football Confederation (AFC) Under-19 Championship qualifiers by thrashing Northern Mariana Islands 10-0 in Cambodia today.

Kedah’s 18-year-old Mohd Aiman Afif Md Afizul became the team’s hero when he scored four goals for the national team in the Group G match held at the National Olympic Stadium, Phnom Penh.

Malaysia, playing without sensational striker Luqman Hakim Shamsudin, took the lead in the seventh minute through Mohd Aiman Afif before Hazim Abu Zaid added another goal two minutes later.

Before the breather, Brad Maloney’s side added another two goals through Muhammad Aidil Azuan in the 20th minute and Fahmi Daniel in injury time to comfortably lead at 4-0.

Within a minute after the break, Mohd Aiman Afif further punished the small islands country of the Pacific Ocean, while Fahmi notched his second goal 10 minutes later and Muhammad Firdaus Ramli converted a penalty in the 64th minute.

Malaysia continued their goal-scoring spree through Muhammad Azrul Haikal Ramlee in the 66th minute and Mohd Aiman Afif in the 74th and 79th minutes.

From the 48 teams competing, only 16, comprising hosts (Uzbekistan), 11 group champions and four best runners-up (five if Uzbekistan win Group F) will qualify for the final round in Uzbekistan next year.

Malaysia opened their campaign by defeating the hosts 5-4 on Saturday, before defeating Brunei 11-0 two days ago, while Thailand thrashed Brunei 9-0 and Northern Mariana Islands 21-0.

Thailand are expected to easily beat Cambodia in today’s match and the automatic slot as the group champions will be known when Malaysia meet Thailand on Sunday.
