All players should take the rap for defeat – Syamer

MANILA, Malaysia’s 0-1 defeat to the Philippines in a Group A football match last night was embarrassing and all players should take responsibility, said midfielder Mohamed Syamer Kutty Abba.

He said no one individual should be blamed for their dismal showing in the 30th SEA Games at the Rizal Memorial Stadium here as it was a team effort.

“We would like to apologise for losing the match. Personally, I have to admit that I feel ashamed as we did not play to our true ability.

“All the players in the match are responsible for this defeat. We now have to buck up for the next game, stick together, work as a team and win because we still have a chance,” he said.

The 22-year-old player also expressed his disappointment as this would be his last SEA Games due to the age limit for men’s football at the biennial Games, which is 22 years and below.

However, he believes that Malaysia still stand a chance of advancing to the semi-finals despite their poor start in the tournament.

Malaysia, who drew 1-1 with Myanmar in their opening match last Monday, are now in fourth place in Group A with one point while Myanmar lead the table with seven points, followed by Cambodia and the Philippines with four points each. Timor Leste are fifth with no point.

Only the top two teams in each group qualify for the semi-finals.

Malaysia must win their remaining matches, against Timor Leste on Monday and Cambodia on Wednesday, to have any hope of qualifying for the next round but it also depends on the results of the other matches.
