Construction of Sungai Nibong Besar Mosque begins

GEORGE TOWN, The implementation of the Sungai Nibong Besar Mosque reconstruction project, which was temporarily halted to give way to the realignment of Bayan Lepas light rail transit (LRT) plan, kicked off today.

Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman said the construction of the mosque on Lot 3423 and Lot 10067 in Mukim 13 of the Northeast District, began with preliminary site cleanup work.

“The cleanup is to provide access to the machinery to the construction site, where the contractor has also begun work on piling points on the construction site,” he said in a statement here today.

In June, several reports on social media claimed that the Bayan Lepas LRT line would take up about 20 per cent of the mosque’s wakaf or endowment land, and pass through the cemetery area.

Meanwhile, a group of more than 100 members from Masjid Jamek Sungai Nibong Besar held peaceful protests in front of KOMTAR tower, following the proposed construction of the LRT line near the mosque and burial ground.

Meanwhile, Zakiyuddin, who is also chairman of the state’s Islamic Affairs, Industrial Development and Community Relations Committee, said the construction project was able to begin ahead of schedule after the Public Works Department (JKR) had completed the amendment drawings.

“Based on the planning by JKR Penang, the construction of the mosque was scheduled to begin in January 2020, but JKR has successfully completed the amendments to enable the contractor to start construction work earlier,” he said.

He said that once completed, the mosque is expected to accommodate a congregation of up to 1,700 people.

The 29.9km-LRT project with 27 stations from KOMTAR to the Penang International Airport and onwards to three man-made islands south of Penang for an estimated cost of RM8 billion.

The project was initiated by the state government under the RM48 billion-Penang Transport Master Plan to address the traffic congestion in the state.
