King’s decision reflects concern for people, country

That the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has decided to interview all MPs given the political developments is testament to the kind of ruler His Majesty is one who is highly just and deeply concerned for the people and country.

This was stated by political analyst Prof Dr Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani who said that Al-Sultan Abdullah, as the Supreme Head of the Federation, could have easily chosen any of two other methods.

He said one of the other methods is to call for the dissolution of Parliament so that a general election can be held and the Ruler can do this as per Article 55 (2) of the Federal Constitution which stipulates that His Majesty may prorogue or dissolve Parliament.

This is, however, a costly step, Mohd Azizuddin told Bernama.

The 2018 general election was held at a cost of RM500 million RM100 million more than the previous general election, in 2013. Some RM4.8 million of the sum was spent on importing from India the indelible ink to be applied to a forefinger of voters.

Calling fresh elections now may cost RM600 million in taxpayers’ money, going by this trend. This is money that can go towards building much-needed schools, hospitals and roads.

The King has opted not to let the Malaysian public bear the brunt of this unnecessary expenditure, Mohd Azizuddin said.

He also said that the third option is to consult the Conference of Rulers on the best resolution to the current political conundrum.

This may take some time as His Majesty would need to speak with and consult every Sultan and Yang Dipertua Negeri to ensure the next best course of action, he said.

Although this is perfectly in line with Article 38 (4) of the Federal Constitution, Al-Sultan Abdullah, in his wisdom, has instead chosen to speak to all the members of the Dewan Rakyat.

This is a decision that reflects the respect and appreciation His Majesty has for the mandate given by the people.

Al-Sultan Abdullah’s actions are also a reflection of the true relevance and power of the monarch and why it is needed more than ever in these times.
