Pahang draws up initiatives to help budget hotel operators

KUANTAN The Pahang government is in the midst of drawing up initiatives to assist budget hotel operators in the state whose businesses were affected by the implementation of the Movement Control Order.

State Tourism, Environment and Plantations Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin said among the initiatives what is under consideration is to give discount vouchers for hotel bookings made through the Pahang State government’s online portal, ‘Pahang Go’.

“For budget hotels, we understand that they (operators) cannot reduce their hotel room prices to entice customers as they have already offered affordable room rates.

“So we have asked the Pahang Go to provide vouchers worth RM20 to RM30 on a first-come-first-serve basis to those who are using the portal (to make bookings),” he said when contacted here today.

Mohd Sharkar said the tourism industry in Pahang had recorded a loss of 1.05 million international arrivals each month between April and June this year when more than 500 hotels in the state offering about 38,000 rooms were unable to operate as normal during the period.

Meanwhile, Pahang Malaysian Budget Hotel Association chairman Pajan Singh lauded the initiative which he described as a timely move and ould be able to benefit about 180 budget hotels in the state.

“It’s a good initiative as currently, budget hotels are forced to compete with five-star and four-star hotels that offer various attractive deals including low room rates to attract guests,” he said.
