Sabah & Labuan MMEA detain local fishing boat with illegal crew

 

KOTA KINABALU A local fishing boat using foreign workers without valid self identification documents was detained by the Sabah and Labuan Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) near here, yesterday.

 

Its director, First Admiral (Maritime) Mohd Rosli Abdullah said the boat was detained 1.2 nautical miles east of Tanjung Tavajun by a maritime patrol vessel at 11 am.

 

“Upon inspection, 19 out of 20 of the crew failed to produce valid documents. All of them are believed to be Indonesians, aged 20 to 44 years old.

 

 

 

“The boat was also suspected of having an expired licence. The boat and crew were later brought to the MMEA jetty in Sepanggar for further investigation.

 

‘’The boat was suspected of carrying out offences under the Immigration Act 1959 and Fisheries Act 1985,” he said in a statement, here, today.

 

Mohd Rosli urged the maritime community to co-operate with the authorities by reporting criminal activities or emergency incidents at sea by calling 088-387774 or MERS 999.
