Penang proposes increase in cap for income tax relief to boost tourism

GEORGE TOWN The Penang government has proposed to the federal government to consider an increase in the cap for RM1,000 income tax relief on spending pertaining to domestic tourism.

State Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman, Yeoh Soon Hin said a proposal letter had been written to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC).

“Domestic tourism is the pillar of the tourism industry until the international borders reopen. The incentive will provide a motivation for people to travel domestically in the long run even when the international borders reopen,” he said in a statement, here, today.

He said the move to encourage domestic travel could reactivate and boost tourism in every state including Penang.

“This could serve to ensure recovery could be accelerated which not only supports local businesses, but also protects jobs,” he added.
