— A policeman suffered a broken toe while attempting to stop a ‘mat rempit’ from escaping in an operation dubbed ‘Ops Samseng Jalanan’ conducted at the Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR), Bagan Ajam, here last night.
Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) district police chief ACP Noorzainy Mohd Noor said that in the 10 pm incident, the 32-year-old policeman with the rank of corporal had trailed the young motorcyclist with his two other friends who were racing illegally and performing dangerous stunts on the highway.
“The 19-year-old youth had stopped at a petrol station area along the highway when the policeman approached him to introduce himself and subsequently grabbed the youth’s shirt.
“The suspect tried to flee by twisting the hand shift gear which caused the motorcycle to turn and the rear tyre hit the policeman’s leg causing injuries to his toe. The youth was arrested by another policeman who was at the scene,” he said in a statement today.
He said that the check on the unemployed youth found that he was riding the motorcycle without a valid licence and the case was being investigated under Section 333 of the Penal Code for obstructing a civil servant from discharging his duties.
