Henry Betah, a Bidayuh Biperoh man from Kampung Giam, Jalan Puncak Borneo near here, has been travelling the world to gain experience, exposure, and knowledge as a chef since he was 29 years old.
Henry, 49, has gained experience working in several countries such as Brunei, Czech Republic, Hungary, Sweden, Germany, Australia, France and Italy, and thanks to his perseverance, he was appointed head chef of a restaurant at a leading hotel in Budapest, Hungary, namely the Grand Hotel Royal Budapest.
He said his first experience was working in Brunei from 1997 to 2000 and after that, he moved to Budapest.
“Every year I was transferred to the sister hotels in several countries to teach the new chefs. The longest I have worked in a hotel was three months,” he told Bernama.
After nine years abroad, Henry decided to return to Kuching in 2006 to pursuing his dream of becoming a successful entrepreneur in the restaurant business by opening his first cafe in Kota Samarahan in the same year.
However, the cafe was forced to shut two years later due to poor business and expensive rental.
In 2010, he decided to work as a head chef at a resort in Santubong until 2016, before holding the same position at a four-star hotel in the city, two years later.
His strong passion in business, prompted him to resign from the hotel in 2018, to open a second cafe, called WhiteDove Cafe located at the junction of Kampung Giam road, Jalan Puncak Borneo, about 38 km from the city centre.
“I have had to overcome various obstacles, but now my customers are increasing, as a result of my expanding business network with members of several associations, clubs and residents around Penrissen and Padawan areas,” he said.
