The new United States (US) Ambassador to Malaysia Brian D. McFeeters today paid a courtesy visit to the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), at Wisma Bernama, here.
The ambassador arrived with three embassy representatives at 2.20pm, and was welcomed by the news agency’s Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mokhtar Hussain and Deputy Editor in Chief of International News Service, Jamaluddin Muhammad.
Upon arrival, McFeeters attended an hour-long discussion with Bernama top officials including Bernama’s chairman Senator Datuk Ras Adiba Mohd Radzi and Editor-in-Chief Abdul Rahman Ahmad.
During the visit, McFeeters, who is fluent in the Malay language, also toured the newsroom and the audio-visual section of Bernama, where he was briefed on their operations by the top management.
The visit to the national news agency today is among the earliest itineraries of the ambassador since handing over his credentials to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah at Istana Negara on Thursday (March 18).
Before leaving he had a meet-and-greet session with Bernama staff.
The ambassador spent half of his 30-year Foreign Service career working in Southeast Asia including as the Political Counsellor of the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur from 2009 to 2011.
McFeeters had previously served as Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, Senior Advisor in the Office of the Counselor to the Secretary of State, and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the State Department’s Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs in Washington.
McFeeters, who arrived in Malaysia on Feb 26, also served as the Deputy Chief of Mission of US Mission in Indonesia, and as Deputy Director of the State Department’s Office of Maritime Southeast Asia.
Besides English and Bahasa Malaysia, he also speaks Indonesian, French, Spanish, and German.
