Sarawak today recorded its highest-ever new COVID-19 positive cases, with 607, to take the total number of cases in the state to 20,959, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).
It said in a statement that four deaths were recorded today, bringing the death toll to 128.
The Sarawak Health Department also declared a new cluster at Jalan Puncak Borneo in Kuching today.
“The Jalan Puncak Borneo cluster is a workplace cluster involving COVID-19 infections among Police Training Centre trainees.
“The index case is a trainee at the centre who was detected through individual symptomatic screening on April 9 at the Kota Sentosa health clinic,” the committee said.
It added that the patient, who hails from Perlis, had arrived in Sarawak on Nov 22 and started developing fever on April 8, before being confirmed to be COVID-19 positive on April 12.
“The infection spread due to close contact and the lack of physical distancing among trainees staying in the dormitories.
“Based on further investigation and screenings of close contacts and friends of the index case, 60 more were found to be COVID-19 positive. As of today, 111 individuals in the cluster have been screened, with 61 testing positive, including the index case,” the committee said.
