KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 16 (Bernama) — The number of flood victims in six states, namely Perak, Selangor, Johor, Kelantan, Melaka and Penang, was reported to have decreased as of 6.30 pm compared to this morning.
In PERAK, a spokesman of the state Disaster Management Committee secretariat said three relief centres (PPS) have been closed in the districts of Hilir Perak, Perak Tengah, and Larut Matang and Selama (LMS) after the floodwaters receded in several affected areas.
The spokesman said 408 victims from 114 families, compared to 524 victims from 153 families this morning, were still placed in five PPS in four districts, namely Hilir Perak, Kerian, Manjung and Perak Tengah and LMS.
Meanwhile, the Manjung district recorded an increase in flood evacuees from 94 to 107 people at the PPS Dewan Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Layang-Layang Kiri.
In SELANGOR, the Social Welfare Department’s InfoBencana website showed that the number of flood victims decreased this afternoon to 187 victims from 51 families compared to 196 victims from 55 families this morning.
In KEDAH, the state Civil Defence Force (APM) Disaster Management Committee secretariat head Major (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain said the two PPS that were opened in Kulim and Bandar Baharu districts for 53 people from 14 families were closed today after floodwaters receded.
In PENANG, state APM operations sector assistant director Maj (PA) Kamal Jakarinah said the number of flood victims placed in the PPS at Dewan Banjir Desa Puri also dropped to 30 people from five families, compared to 42 people from 12 families this morning.
In KELANTAN, according to JKM’s InfoBencana website, the number of flood victims also decreased to 1,925 from 647 families from 2,036 people involving 686 families this morning.
In MELAKA, the State Disaster Management Committee secretariat said in a statement that the number of flood victims at the PPS Office of the State Legislative Assembly Development and Coordination Committee Offices (Japerun), Durian Tunggal dropped to 48 victims from 13 families compared to 53 people involving 15 families this morning.
In JOHOR, the state District Disaster Management Committee announced that the number of flash flood victims had dropped to 330 this afternoon compared to 345 this morning, following the closure of PPS Sekolah Kebangsaan Melayu Raya, Pontian.
A total of 3,107 victims from 969 heads of households (HHHs) were placed in 26 PPS until noon yesterday, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA).
In a statement today, the agency said seven states, namely Penang, Perak, Selangor, Melaka, Johor, Kelantan and Sabah, are still affected by floods involving 13 districts.
It said in general the situation in all states has improved, with five PPS being closed.
The five PPS are Sekolah Kebangsaan Melayu Raya, Pontian, Johor; Japerun Kesidang in Melaka Tengah; Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Padang Tembak in Hilir Perak; Sungai Baru Community Hall in Larut, Matang and Selama districts, in Perak; and Simpang Tiga Parit National School, Perak Tengah.
According to the statement, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) had issued a ‘Significant Weather’ forecast at 3 pm today about wind concentration in the coastal areas of Kelantan and Terengganu, as well as north and central Sarawak, expected to occur between tomorrow and Nov 19, which has the potential to increase humidity in the area.
The Public Works Department (JKR) also reported that as of 2 pm today there were five locations affected by flooding, six locations with landslides, one location where a road collapsed, one location with a sinkhole, and two locations where bridges were damaged/collapsed.
It said all incidents involved eight locations with two each in Kelantan and Negeri Sembilan and one each in Perak, Terengganu, Johor and Pahang.
