PORT DICKSON: The Malaysian Battalion (MALBATT) 850-12 is set to enhance its preparedness and vigilance as it undertakes a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, according to Chief of Defence Force Gen Tan Sri Mohammad Ab Rahman. The transition from MALBATT 850-11 to MALBATT 850-12 will occur in phases, spanning four flights from November 6 to 20.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Gen Mohammad emphasized the meticulous planning involved in the rotation of MALBATT contingents, which aims to ensure seamless operations and maintain combat strength in the mission area. During a ceremony for the United Nations Service Medal (UNSM) and the disbandment of MALBATT 850-11 at the Army Basic Training Centre, Gen Mohammad praised the outgoing contingent for its discipline and work quality amid challenges from the conflict between Israel and Lebanon.
At the ceremony, 853 personnel and officers, including members of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) and a financial officer from the Ministry of Defence, were awarded the UNSM
. The contingent was led by Colonel Burhan Sagoni. Gen Mohammad noted the positive reception of MALBATT 850-11 by the local community, attributing this to the effective cooperation between peacekeepers and residents.
The efficiency and professionalism of MALBATT 850-11 underscored the capabilities of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) and RBAF in international peacekeeping efforts. Despite challenging operational conditions, the contingent maintained its reputation as a respected peacekeeping force.
Gen Mohammad also mentioned that MALBATT is prepared for potential assignments in other conflict zones, such as Syria, pending directives from the United Nations and approval from national leadership.
