SINGAPORE, Oct 26 (Bernama) — Singapore has named a species of hybrid orchid as \u2018Dendrobium Queen Azizah of Malaysia\u2019 in honour of the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.<\/p>\n

The naming of the flower was held in conjunction with the state visit of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri\u2019ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Tunku Azizah to Singapore from yesterday until Friday (Oct 28).<\/p>\n

Their Majesties were presented with the orchid\u2019s new name at the Orchid Naming Ceremony at Istana, Orchard Road here today, which was also attended by Singapore President Halimah Yacob and her husband Mohammed Abdullah Alhabshee.<\/p>\n

Their Majesties were accompanied by their daughter Tengku Puteri Raja Tengku Puteri Afzan Aminah Hafizatullah.<\/p>\n

At the ceremony, Their Majesties also officiated at the naming ceremony by replacing the old plaque with a new one that had the words ‘Dendrobium Queen Azizah of Malaysia\u2019 engraved on it.<\/p>\n

The flower is a robust and free-flowering orchid hybrid which produces semi-erect inflorescences of about 50cm in length that bear over 20 well-arranged flowers and each flower measuring approximately 4.5cm in width.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The orchid has curled petals and sepals with golden yellow in colour and complemented by a captivating magenta lip.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Singapore has a tradition of planting the orchid species, which is Singapore\u2019s national flower and is usually named after leaders and dignitaries who make official visits to the republic.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar and the Permaisuri of Johor, Raja Zarith Sofiah Idris Shah are among the dignitaries who have been presented with an orchid named in their honour during their official visit to Singapore in July.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Singapore also named an orchid in honour of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, in 2018.<\/p>\n
