KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 7 (Bernama) — The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Indicators 2021 showed a significant increase to 71 per cent (175 indicators) compared to 59 per cent (146 indicators) the previous year, said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).<\/p>\n

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin said DOSM produced five Reports of the SDG Indicators 2021 consisting of the Executive Summary and four reports based on five focus areas of SDG, namely People, Prosperity,\u00a0 Planet,\u00a0 Peace and Partnership.<\/p>\n

\u201cSixteen Goals have achieved the availability of indicators exceeding 50 per cent where the highest availability of indicators achievement by goals are Goal 4: Quality Education (100 per cent) followed by Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (92 per cent ) and Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being (89 per cent),\u201d he said in a statement today.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Mohd Uzir said the goal that recorded below 50 per cent of indicator availability is Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation (45 per cent).<\/p>\n

The report released by DOSM shows the SDG achievement has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the implementation of Movement Control Orders (MCO) which impacted the society in terms of health, economy and social.<\/p>\n

In the health aspect indicator under Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being reported the death rate due to road accidents in each 100,000 population decreased from 14.3 (2020) to 13.9 (2021) where among the reasons that contributed was cross-border travel restrictions implemented during the MCOs.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, in the economic aspect under Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth reported the annual growth rate of real Gross Domestic Products (GDP) per capita grew by 2.7 per cent in 2021 as compared to a contraction of 5.3 per cent in the previous year due to the gradual opening of the economic sector this year.<\/p>\n

It also reported that GDP is expected to\u00a0 grow continuously as it posted a growth of 9.3 per cent (3Q 2021: 2.9 per cent) for the first three quarters of 2022. However, under the same indicator, the effects of COVID-19 have recorded an increase in the unemployment rate from 3.3 per cent in 2019 to 4.6 per cent in 2021.<\/p>\n

As Home-Based Teaching and Learning (PdPR) and work from home policy (WFH) were implemented during MCOs, the percentage of individuals using the Internet increased from 89.6 per cent (2020) to 96.8 per cent in 2021 under Goal 17: Partnership for the Goals.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, under Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production on environment aspects have reported an increase of clinical waste handled for destruction in the incinerator from 39.9 thousand metric tonnes (2020) to 57.4 thousand metric tonnes (2021).<\/p>\n

In the transportation sector under Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure have shown a decrease in the number of passengers handled at the airport\u00a0 from 26.8 million (2020) to 11.0 million (2021).<\/p>\n
