OVER 1.7 MILLION FOREIGN WORKERS IN MALAYSIA HAVE TEMPORARY WORK PASSES

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Immigration Department records show that there are 1,781,598 foreign workers holding valid temporary work passes in the country as of June 30, said the Home Ministry in a written reply to Teresa Kok Suh Sim (DAP-Seputeh) at Lower House yesterday.

The highest number were from Indonesia (728,870) followed by Nepal (405,898), Bangladesh (221,089), Myanmar (127,705 ), India (114,455), Pakistan (59,281), Philippines (56,153), Vietnam (29,039), China (15,399), Thailand (12,603), Sri Lanka (5,964), Cambodia (5,103) and Laos (39).

Kok wanted to know the breakdown of foreign workers by country and the job sectors involved.

Most of the foreign workers were employed were in six sectors; construction (350,740), manufacturing (636,593) , services (242,536), plantation (261,530), agriculture (161,003) and house maid (129,196).
