Global Potential for State’s Produce

KUCHING: There is a huge potential for Sarawak to market its agricultural produce to the global community, especially China, International Trade and E-Commerce Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said.

He thus suggested that the relevant authorities and parties work closely to enhance productivity and product quality, and come up with marketing strategies to promote and market the state’s produce to the world market.

Based on statistics from Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade), there is high demand for Musang King durian, birds nest, Tongkat Ali and marine produce among mainland Chinese.

Sarawak has what it takes to produce all those for the mainland Chinese market, he said during a dialogue with Matrade chief executive officer Dr Mohd Shahreen Madros at his office on Tuesday.

Sarawak, which is blessed with quality land and water, has been described as ‘the heaven on earth’ by many foreign researchers and investors, he noted.

He added that it is now all down to the various government agencies to tap such potential so as to come up with quality produce that meet global demand.

Both Wong and Shahreen agreed on the need to further assist small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Sarawak to develop products in demand in the world market.

Shahreen said Matrade will work closely with the state government by providing information and services to individuals who need them and create awareness of the global demand among the SMEs so as to promote the produce of Sarawak to the world market.

According to him, it is vital for SMEs to change their marketing strategy and mindset if they want to play a part in the global market.

He added that Sarawak had the potential to promote halal products in China.
