Penang Durian Festival expects to attract 50,000 visitors

GEORGE TOWN, The annual Penang Durian Festival that will be held from July 5 to 7 at the Seberang Jaya expo site, is expected to attract about 50,000 visitors, says State Health, Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Rural Development Committee chairman Dr Afif Bahardin.

He said these visitors were not only from the state but also fruit’s enthusiasts from the neighbouring states in the northern region .

This festival was part of the state government’s efforts to promote the fruits as a boost to the state’s economy, he said.

The Penang Durian Festival has succeeded in making Penang as an important hub of durians that not only can be purchased at affordable price but also of high quality, he said in a press conference to promote the event.

He said various types of durians at the Penang Durian Festival this year would include Musang King, Hati Merah, Kapri, Labu, Udang Merah and Duri Hitam that would be offered at five to 20 per cent lower than market price.

There will be durian-related competitions, among others, the best durian clone and the northern region’s best durian, to be held during the festival and those interested can contact the Penang Agriculture Department at 04-5372144.
