Maloney calls up 34 for AFF U-18 tourney training camp

KUALA LUMPUR, Two national youth players who recently had the opportunity to train in Japan, Ali Imran Sukari and Harith Haiqal Adam Afkar, were among 34 players called up by Under-19 interim head coach, Brad Maloney for national training camp at Wisma FAM, from July 20 to Aug 3.

Both are from the National Football Development Programme (NFDP) and were among 21 players selected from 11 Southeast Asian countries, where each country was represented by two players except Vietnam, to form an All-Star team.

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), in a statement, said the training camp was to prepare for the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Under-18 Championship in Vietnam between Aug 5-19.

Six players are also in the waiting list to replace any of the 34 players if injuries occur.

According to the statement, Maloney would decide on the 23 best players after 15 days of training before they depart for Ho Chi Minh City on Aug 4.

Maloney’s squad was drawn in Group B together with hosts Vietnam, Singapore, Cambodia, Australia and Thailand.

Malaysia will face the hosts in the opening match on Aug 7 and then play Singapore (Aug 9); Cambodia (Aug 11); Australia (Aug 13) and Thailand (August 15).

The national Under-19 squad emerged 2018 AFF Under-19 champions after defeating Myanmar 4-3 in the tournament held in Indonesia.
