Sabah to launch third cooking oil brand in Keningau

TUARAN  Sabah is expected to launch another local cooking oil product next month in the district of Keningau.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said it would be the third cooking oil brand produced by the state government which would be handled by the Sabah Land Development Board (SLDB).

‘’The cooking oil factory will be sited in the Keningau district and SLDB had contacted me over its launching next month.

“I am confident that the opening of the factory will open up more employment opportunities and generate numerous benefits to the state economy,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after visiting several areas, including meeting with residents at the Sabah Rubber Industry Board (LIGS) Placement Scheme, here, today.

On Feb 3, the Sabah government made history by launching its own brand of cooking oil product, the Benta Enak Sedap Sehat (BESS) brand in Tawau, by Benta Wawasan Sdn Bhd, which is now capable of packaging about 2,000 metric tonnes of cooking oil per month.

Subsequently, on July 4, Sabah once again launched another brand of cooking oil, ‘’Gold’’ in Sandakan, which is produced by the state-owned company Sawit Kinabalu.

On his visit, Mohd Shafie said he, accompanied by Sabah Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Junz Wong, had inspected several potential areas for development in the district.

‘’There are many areas that can be developed in Tuaran especially in terms of fisheries and agriculture.

‘’Therefore, the state government through the Sabah Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry has allocated 40 lots in the coastal area in this district to be turned into a fish farming centre.

“The lots will be given to youths in the district and we will also help provide fish fry to ensure it can be developed,” he said.

He also said the government had also identified several areas in Kuala Penyu, Kudat, Kunak and several other districts to implement such programmes.
