Agong, Raja Permaisuri convey condolences to family of national badminton legend Datuk Ng Boon Bee

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 (Bernama) — The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah expressed their condolences to the family of national badminton legend Datuk Ng Boon Bee who died yesterday.

Through a post on the Istana Negara’s Facebook page today, Their Majesties expressed their sadness over his death and hoped that his family would be patient and persevere in facing this sad and bitter situation.

“Their Majesties greatly appreciate the service, deeds and contribution by the deceased to the country and regarded his death as a great loss to the country’s badminton sport,” according to the posting.

The former national badminton doubles player died at the Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (HRPB) in Ipoh, at 4 pm yesterday. He was 84 years old.

Ng and his partner Datuk Tan Yee Khan became champions the first time they represented the country at the All England Championship in 1965.

Among his other stellar gold medal achievements were the 1970 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games men’s doubles, 1962 Asian Games Jakarta men’s doubles, 1966 Asian Games Bangkok men’s doubles, 1970 Asian Games Bangkok men’s and mix doubles and 1967 Jakarta Thomas Cup men’s team.

He also managed to give the Malaysian contingent a silver medal at the 1972 Munich Olympic when paired with Datuk Punch Gunalan.
