Applications For Tunku Abdul Rahman Scholarship Open Today

Kuala lumpur: Applications for the Tunku Abdul Rahman Scholarship (BTAR) are open officially from today in conjunction with the birthday of Malaysia's first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj. National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said applications are open till April 8 for all Malaysians who wish to pursue a Bachelor's degree at local public or private universities in various fields, adding that the opening of applications on the 123rd anniversary of Tunku Abdul Rahman's birthday reflected the continuity of his vision that emphasised education being the bridge to the future and the foundation of a nation state.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, BTAR is a comprehensive scholarship designed to support high potential students in need to further their studies at local institutions. The scholarship employs a holistic approach, considering factors such as background, challenges, living situations, and candidates' aspirations. This was announced by Aaron at an event commemorating Tunku Abdul Rahman at the National Museum.

Applications can be made at the Yayasan Tunku Abdul Rahman website, Aaron added. He emphasized that the first prime minister's legacy and philosophy in building a nation state continue to be the core for the National Unity Ministry to strengthen unity in a multiracial society.

Tunku Abdul Rahman not only led the country to independence on August 31, 1957 but also established a strong framework of statehood. This framework was based on democratic values, the rule of law, and unity among its people, which remain relevant today. Aaron highlighted Tunku's introduction of power sharing and consensus building in a multiracial country, urging people to think as Malaysians rather than as separate ethnic groups.

Aaron stated that his ministry will reemphasize the idea of a nation state as a means to unite the country, especially amidst social polarisation and differing views. He explained that a nation state refers to a sovereign country where its people share a national identity, common values, and a spirit of togetherness as Malaysians.

To ensure this aspiration is understood and accepted, the National Unity Ministry will initiate various activities, including engagement sessions, roundtable discussions, town hall sessions, and a Nation State Conference in September.
