Cambodia-Thailand Conflict: PM Anwar Holds Discussion With Trump

Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held discussions with United States President Donald Trump regarding the Cambodia-Thailand conflict. In a Facebook post, Anwar said the matter was discussed during a phone call from Trump, who also raised bilateral relations as well as global issues of mutual interest. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar explained Malaysia's role in urging both Cambodia and Thailand to remain calm and return to the negotiating table through dialogue and bilateral and ASEAN mechanisms. He emphasized Malaysia's readiness to assist efforts to defuse the situation, protect civilians, and restore regional stability, adhering to the ASEAN spirit of good neighbourliness. As the ASEAN Chairman, Anwar announced plans to convene a Special Meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers to assess the situation and support measures to defuse tensions in the region. He also expressed appreciation for the active engagement of the United States with ASEAN and the confidence placed in Malaysia a s the ASEAN Chairmanship 2025. The Cambodia-Thailand border conflict, which has persisted for a century, saw a resurgence in July, leading to a five-day military clash. A ceasefire was agreed upon in Kuala Lumpur on July 24, followed by the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord on October 26 during the 47th ASEAN Summit, witnessed by Anwar and Trump. Nevertheless, fighting has recently resumed, resulting in several deaths and the displacement of thousands.
