Manila: The Department of Agriculture (DA) unveiled a PHP20/kg rice initiative aimed at assisting the residents of Masbate, who were severely impacted by Severe Tropical Storm Opong (international name Bualoi). This program, part of the ‘Benteng Bigas Meron (BBM) Na’ initiative, seeks to provide affordable rice to the storm-hit province.
According to Philippines News Agency, the National Food Authority (NFA) has dispatched truckloads of affordable rice stocks to Masbate to support the DA’s initiative. DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized the importance of this program, stating that it aims to ensure that Masbate residents have access to more affordable rice alternatives during this challenging time.
“For one month in Masbate, starting Tuesday, we will be selling PHP20 rice to all households – up to 30 kilos – to immediately help our fellow Filipinos who are in direct need of stable, affordable food,” Secretary Laurel announced. This initiative allows a higher purchase limit in Masbate compared to the usual 10 kg per month cap set for vulnerable sectors.
Based on data from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), approximately 70,000 households in Masbate were affected by the storm. In response, the DA has also announced plans to extend the BBM Na program to Eastern Samar, ensuring more areas receive necessary aid.
