Kuala lumpur: The 2026-2030 Department of Statistics Malaysia Strategic Plan (PSJ DOSM) has been unveiled, outlining four main strategies aimed at enhancing innovative statistical services, digital transformation, human capital capacity development, and the empowerment of the national statistical system.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin emphasized that the new strategic plan serves as a continuation of the PSJ 2021-2025. It aims to ensure the implementation of an integrated, coordinated, and aligned strategic approach at all levels. The plan is designed to cultivate a disciplined, high-performing, and results-oriented work culture, supporting the aspirations of the 13th Malaysia Plan (MP13), which prioritizes execution.
The PSJ DOSM 2026-2030 continues to focus on modernizing the statistical system, empowering human capital, expanding data access, strengthening data governance, and enhancing strategic cooperation with ministries, agencies, and stakeholders. This ongoing commitment is reflected in DOSM's vision of Leading Statistical Services for Universal Well-being, alongside its motto, Statistics as the Pulse of Life.
Mohd Uzir highlighted that DOSM's mission has been renewed to produce quality, timely, and reliable statistics to support data-driven decisions. This marks a shift in DOSM's role from being a mere producer of statistics to becoming a key supporter of policy decisions, planning, and national development implementation.
In a separate statement, DOSM emphasized the plan's role in strengthening its international standing in statistics, in line with Malaysia's recent achievement of ranking first globally in the biennial Open Data Inventory (ODIN) 2024/25 report by Open Data Watch (ODW). This achievement, a significant leap from the 67th position in the ODIN 2022/23 assessment, underscores the global recognition of the openness, quality, and usability of Malaysia's official data.
During the strategic plan period, DOSM aims to bolster international cooperation with organizations such as the United Nations Statistical Commission and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. This effort ensures the relevance, comparability, and competitiveness of Malaysian statistics on the global stage.
From 2018 to 2025, DOSM has produced 7,335 statistical publications, increasing to 7,356 by January 2026. This reflects the department's commitment to providing quality, timely, and reliable statistics. In alignment with the digitalization agenda, DOSM has introduced 37 digital services, including data portals, dashboard panels, and interactive visuals to enhance user access to official statistics.
"Data requests through eStatistik recorded a total of 13,214 requests from 2021 to 2025, indicating a high level of reliance and use of official data among policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders," DOSM added.
