Floods: Stranded victim shares situation by going on live on TikTok

JOHOR BAHRU, March 2 (Bernama) — As he waited for help, a man who was stranded at a restaurant in Segamat town after floodwaters shut off the road leading to the area, used the Tik Tok app to share his situation.

Using a Tik Tok account under the name “Pak Arab”, Syed Syaiful Syah who was stranded at the food premises with his friend told his Tik Tok live viewers that he had gone to Tenang in Segamat earlier to clear the fallen trees in the area as a result of yesterday’s heavy rain.

However, he learnt from other members of the public while on his way home that floodwaters had reached up to chest level in the town.

“I still don’t know how things are in my village since I can’t get there. I’m now waiting for help at Restoran Natasha, because people say this area is located on higher ground,” he said during the live session at about 3 am today.

“Pak Arab” Tik Tok live session had caught the attention of a member of Civil Defence Force (APM), who left a comment saying that an APM team was now in Genuang and on its way to rescue him.

“Be careful and avoid rushing water. We will stay in touch during this live session,” said the APM representative using the profile name Caldeeja Lee.

Some viewers also joined the live session and shared with “Pak Arab” about the situation in their respective areas and their flood experience.

“I always help others, especially during post-flood aid efforts. I help them (flood victims) clean their house because I have necessary equipment. But I have never thought that I would be stranded this time,” he said.

As of 8am today, the number of flood victims evacuees in Johor had doubed with 25,213 people being evacuted to relief centres with Segamat recording the highest number of victims with 7,272.
