SIBU, Jan 22 — A team comprising four Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) elected representatives and a member of the Senate, dubbed `A New Team for a New Sibu’, will hit the ground soon to offer solutions to problems faced by Sibu residents.
The members of the team are four assemblymen; Dr Annuar Rapaee (Nangka), Michael Tiang (Pelawan), Joseph Chieng (Bukit Assek), Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (Dudong), and a member of the Senate, Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew.
The team was formed after GPS managed to wrestle three of the four seats in the Sibu area from the opposition at the 12th Sarawak state election on Dec 18 last year, aiming to accelerate development there.
Dr Annuar said the five members of the team had a meeting yesterday for work distribution, as well as a discussion on methods to address problems faced by the community in the area.
He said Tiong will be in charge of handling issues related to drainage, flooding and water; Tiang to handle public transport; Chieng to oversee traffic and roads, and Lau to focus on low-cost housing and recreational centres.
Dr Annuar himself will be looking at ways to improve services at the Sibu Hospital.
“All of these are matters close to the hearts of the residents of Sibu which we will resolve. We will go to the ground with other government agencies to look and find solutions to the problems,” he said.
He said this to reporters after giving a briefing on the development of Bukit Assek, which was also attended by Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Dr Annuar, who is also the Assistant Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, said he had asked the Sibu Hospital to brief the team soon in a move to improve the services at the hospital.
However, he said this new team was not similar to the Sibu visionary team which was established before, comprising Barisan Nasional elected representatives in the Sibu parliamentary constituency, which was said to be more daring in voicing the people’s problems and communicating the needs of the people effectively.
Meanwhile, he also reminded the Chinese community to continue to adhere to the standard operating procedures during Chinese New Year celebrations to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
