Immigration depot breakouts since 1999

KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 (Bernama) — Following are incidents of immigration depot breakouts in the country since 1999.

July 26,1999 – 192 Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Indian and Indonesia escape from Lenggeng Immigration Depot in Negeri Sembilan. Nine recaptured.

Feb 1,2002 – 153 Africans flee while being brought to immigration detention centre in Kemayan, Pahang, 138 of them recaptured.

April 6, 2011 – 109 detainees, the majority of them Myanmars breakout from Lenggeng Immigration Depot, Negeri Sembilan. Police succeed in recapturing 55.

Feb 28, 2019 – Indonesian man flees from Machap Umboo Immigration Depot, Melaka.

Oct 17, 2020 – Five detainees escape from Pekan Nanas Immigration Depot, Johor.

Jan 2, 2021 – Seven Indonesians held at Lenggeng Immigration Depot, Negeri Sembilan escape. Three rearrested.

May 14, 2021 – Six Filipinos flee from Manggatal Immigration Depot in Sabah. Four recaptured.

June 27, 2021 – Eight Thai men held at Tanah Merah Immigration Depot in Kelantan escape from their cells.

Nov 10, 2021 – 14 Filipinos escape from Kimanis Immigration Depot in Sabah. Seven rearrested.

April 20, 2022 – 528 Rohingnya detainees breakout from Sungai Bakap Immigration Depot, Kedah

* As of 4 pm, police have recaptured 357 and are tracking down the remaining escapees.

The 4.30 am incident also claimed the lives of six of the escapees after they were involved in a road mishap at KM 168 of the North-South Expressway (southbound) near Jawi while fleeing..
