Independent Assessment Confirms KLIA Aerotrain System Functioning As Intended

Kuala lumpur: Independent railway assessors have confirmed that the KL International Airport (KLIA) Aerotrain system is operating as intended, with service disruptions observed since commissioning being those commonly encountered during the early operational phase of complex rail systems.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) stated that these disruptions do not pose a safety risk due to structured engineering controls and continuous monitoring that are in place to manage the issues effectively.

The Comprehensive Action Plan (CAP), which began on November 15 last year, has helped maintain stable Aerotrain operations. The Operational Service Availability reached 100 percent in December 2025, up from 98.67 percent in July 2025, reflecting high system availability during ongoing inspection, testing, and validation activities.

The independent assessment highlighted two critical systems that directly affect train reliability, service availability, and recovery performance: the power supply system and the rolling stock. While the power supply system's design and protection were found adequate, areas such as installation quality and power rail condition monitoring require continued focus for long-term reliability.

Attention was also placed on the rolling stock's current collector device, crucial for maintaining traction continuity and service stability due to its interaction with the power rail.

The CAP has been executed through coordinated workstreams, including inspection, rectification, system testing, validation, and trial operations. Inspection and rectification activities across the Aerotrain system have been completed, with the program now working towards closing out remaining rectification actions identified during system-wide inspections.

During the CAP period, engineering hours were initially set from 9 pm to 7 am but were adjusted to 11 pm to 7 am to accommodate festive and school holiday peak periods. MAHB will continue implementing the remaining CAP measures with ongoing monitoring and independent oversight to further enhance system reliability and ensure consistent Aerotrain operations at KLIA.
